Water Resources Databases

  • AgNIC is a database of agricultural information resources, including information on water.
  • Agricultural Library Water Quality Information
  • Agricultural Research Service Water Database is a collection of precipitation and streamflow data from small agricultural watersheds in the United States.
  • AQUASTAT is the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) global information system of water and agriculture developed by the Land and Water Development Division.
  • Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants is "a computerized bibliographic database (Copyright University of Florida, 2000) devoted to freshwater aquatic and wetland plants as well as terrestrial and aquatic invasive plants.
  • ChemFinder--Chemical Searching and Information Integration; a chemical database that provides physical property data and 2D chemical structures.
  • Chesapeake Bay Watershed Initiative (CBWI)The Chesapeake Bay Watershed Initiative (CBWI) is a long-term, multi-state aerospace science and technology program focusing on the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. It has been designed as an authentic scientific experiment that merges environmental education with community service and aerospace science and technology education. 
  • CRIS (Current Research Information Systems); documentation and reporting system for publicly supported agricultural, food and nutrition, and forestry research in the United States.
  • Contaminant Exposure and Effects--Terrestrial Vertebrates
    (CEE-TV) Database
  • Database of the Occurrence and Distribution of Pesticides in Chesapeake Bay compiles most of the pesticide residue data measured in surface water, surface microlayer, groundwater, sediment, and biota, of Chesapeake Bay from 1976 to 1994.
  • Delaware River Keeper Delaware River Keeper is a nonprofit membership organization that has worked since 1988 to strengthen citizen protection of the Delaware River and its tributary watersheds. An affiliate of the American Littoral Society, a national conservation group, Riverkeeper works throughout the Delaware's entire 13,000 square mile watershed, which includes portions of NY, NJ, PA and DE.
  • DRBC Hydrological Information
    This site includes information and links on the subjects of weather, floods, droughts, stream flows, and hydrologic conditions.
  • Delaware River Basin Regional Information Management Service
    RIMS is an information management service dedicated to assisting in data management, data access, and regional communication for environmental issues in the Delaware River Basin.
  • DCNR Watershed Education
    Watershed Education, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks is an educational program for students and teachers in grades 6-12. It promotes classroom and field research, hands-on ecological investigations, networking, partnerships, stewardship and community service in an effort to produce environmentally literate citizens.
  • DUCKDATA is a bibliographic database for North American waterfowl and their wetland habitats.
  • Index of Watershed Indicators
    U.S. EPA, Surf Your Watershed
    A compilation of information on the "health" of U.S. rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands and coastal areas.
  • Environmental Fate Data Base "Bibliographic and experimental values data files on environmental fate and physical/chemical properties.
  • Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
    The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) site contains information about the program, data and metadata files, and related publications.
  • EPA Databases and Software
  • EXTOXNET (EXTension TOXicology NETwork); information available includes toxicology newsletters and fact sheets and keyword searchable Pesticide Information Profiles and Toxicology Information Briefs.
  • FishBase is "a global information system with all you ever wanted to know about fishes. FishBase is a relational database with information to cater todifferent professionals such as research scientists, fisheries managers, zoologists and many more. 
  • Geospatial Data Clearinghouse
  • Lehigh Earth Observatory
    LEO projects include the operation and maintenance of a digital hydroprobe on the Lehigh River, analysis of water chemistry for tributaries along the Lehigh River, and ecosystems studies in the Lehigh Watershed. The data is received on a weekly basis and can be accessed at this site.
  • Locate Your Watershed is part of the Environmental Protection Agency's Surf Your Watershed site where you can get various types of information--including an Index of Watershed Indicators--about specific watersheds in the United States.
  • Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium
  • National Drinking Water Contaminant Occurrence Database was developed to satisfy the statutory requirements set by Congress in the 1996 SDWA amendments. 
  • National Elevation Datasets (USGS)
  • National Extension Water Quality Database contains more than 2,600 citations and nearly 1,000 full-text documents of water quality and waste management publications produced by state cooperative extension services; publications cover conservation; drinking water quality; pest, waste and nutrient management; water wells and testing.
  • National Wetlands Inventory provides wetlands maps from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • National Water Quality Standards Database is a U. S. Environmental Protection Agency database "being developed for the purposes of displaying water quality standards (WQS), including designated uses and criteria, for the Nation's surface waters."
  • National Wetlands Research Center (NWRC) Publications and Information Products is a database of studies and reports from this organization within the USGS.
  • Nutrient Criteria Database from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, was developed "to store and analyze nutrient water quality data and to serve as an information resource for states, tribes, and others in establishing scientifically defensible numeric nutrient criteria. 
  • PAN Pesticide Database "brings together a diverse array of information on pesticides from many different sources.
  • Pennsylvania Statewide Volunteer Monitoring Database
  • Pesticide Properties Database from the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, "is a compendium of chemical and physical properties of 230 widely used pesticides. Information included in the database focuses on 16 of the most important properties that affect pesticides transport and degradation characteristics."
  • Publications of the U. S. Geological Survey; database of documents authored by USGS staff.
  • River Watch NOAA
    The National Weather Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has launched the River Watch site, providing up-to-date river forecast information for the nation’s largest river basins such as the Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, and Ohio. Daily river summaries are provided for each basin, in addition to five-day forecasts for river stage heights. This site also offers hyperlinks to river forecast sites for the other regions of the US as well as other related sites. This is an excellent resource for current information on river level conditions, and is made more valuable by the geographical extent of its coverage.
  • Safe Drinking Water Query Form provides access to information about Safe Drinking Water Act violations and enforcement history for public water supplies during the last ten years; see Safe Drinking Water Overview for more information.
  • Surf Your Watershed
    U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
    A database of urls to web sites associated with the watershed approach of environmental management, as well as data sets of relevant environmental information that can be queried.
  • Watershed Assessment, Tracking and Environmental Results (WATERS)
    U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
    This site provides unified access to water quality information from state and U.S. EPA and U.S. Geological Survey databases, including the EPA's Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Database and its new National Water Quality Standards Database. WATERS users can search for information on the quality of a particular body of water by clicking on an interactive map.

  • Selected Water Resources Abstracts is a database of abstracts of U. S. Geological Survey publications. The database "was compiled from several sources for USGS abstracts on the subject of water resources since 1977, plus some earlier abstracts."

  • USGS National Water Quality Assessment Data Warehouse "enables water resource managers, scientists, and the public to find data about the quality of the water at 2,800 stream sites and 5,000 wells in 46 states, according to the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS)."
  • USGS Water-Quality Information 
  • USGS Water Resources of Pennsylvania
    Pennsylvania’s current and historical water data is available at this site. Search a list of all Pennsylvania USGS Gauging Stations (by county, basin, and map).
  • USGS WRSIC Research Abstracts "is a collection of international water research compiled by the Water Resources Scientific Information Center (WRSIC) of the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). The research abstracted in this database covers a wide variety of topics that span the time period from 1967 to October, 1993." This database contains over 265,000 abstracts and citations. Managed by the Universities Water Information Network.

  • Water Experts Database; search or browse to locate water professionals with various areas of expertise.
  • Watershed Information Technical System The goal of the Watershed Information Technical System (WITS) is to provide the information and tools to support local watershed planning, restoration, monitoring, and education via the CERES Web. CERES and its project WITS are programs of the California Resources Agency.
  • Watersheds in the Great Lakes Region
  • WaterWeb Links Database; links to water-related Web sites searchable by keyword(s), geographic location or language.
  • Window to My Environment - Use interactive maps and tools to answer popular questions about environmental conditions affecting air, land and water in your community; and learn what is being done locally to protect the environment.
  • Wetlands Values Database was developed by the National Wetlands Inventory project which was established to generate information about the characteristics, extent and status of the Nation's wetlands and deepwater habitats.
